vintage smocked pillowcase dress

please meet miss ben.

she is my friend danett's little sweetie pie daughter.

i thought miss ben would look like a sweetie pie in this vintage smocked dress that i made for her out of a pillowcase.

turns out that i was right.... she does look sooooooo sweet.

her mommy takes the best pictures in the whole wide world.

(my dress - thrifted and restyled by me. aleigh and MK - vintage sheet smocked dresses, made by me. bryson's shirt and shorts - thrifted. Mr Collins shirt and shorts - ae. girls flower pins and hair accessories - felt, crafted by me. 100% hand stitched with love)

she made my little family look so perfect... you can't even tell that it was over 100 degrees here!

she even finds ways to capture MKs "look"
and she even takes sneaky pictures of me and aleigh when i am not looking. that i love. because aleigh always holds on to my necklaces, just like MK always plays with my hair.

and she has captured so many shots of bryson for me - from infant alllll the way to this fine lookin' young man.

please check out danetts blog to view it all for yourself. she is the sweetest.

okay... so back to the dress....

there are a million tutorials out there for "smocking"

however, i learned to "smock" way back in the day when i was sewing in my parents basement.

its super easy.

you fill your bottom bobbin with elastic thread and thread your machine with cordinating thread up top.

then you just sew a spiral around your tube.

(and then you have danett take pictures for you of the dress because she makes it look sooooo cute.)

i would also love someone to volunteer to be a tester for me!

if you would like to be the recipiant of a little dress, leave me a comment.

i will mail you out one of my little dresses made out of one of the vintage pillow cases that i hoard and you can just let me know if your little darling likes it, how it holds up after washing, and if there are other improvements that i can make, ect.

love,

jenna.

  1. Oh my gosh, I love this dress! I love vintage fabrics and the smocking is beautiful! I have so much trouble smocking with my machine, it doesn't like it.

If you want someone to put one of your dresses to the test, my 2 year old will happily help you out! She's quite, umm, energetic. :)

Now I'm off to check out your blog!

  4. Oh, that is just plain beautiful! I've never tried smocking . . . elastic thread kind of scares me :-/ And hey, I'm okay with more pillow case dresses as long as they're cute, and yours definitely is :-) Those pictures are gorgeous, too! Candid shots of mothers and their babies are just the sweetest--you look so beautiful with your little girl. I love it!

  5. Oh, and in case I'm entering a dress giveaway with all these comments . . . I don't have a little girl :-( (Although I'm sure my son would look smashing in it) so if I happen to win, feel free to draw again and pick someone who could put it to better use than I can!

  6. I love this dress! And thank you for the tip on smocking...it sounds so much less intimidating! If you still have a vintage pillow case available, I have a 6 year old daughter who LOVES dresses and flowers (and birds, insects, rainbows and kitties). She would look gorgeous in one of your beauties!

  7. I'd love to volunteer to try out a dress! I have three girlies you could use, plus a niece! My daughters are a 6, 3T, and newborn, and my niece is probably wearing a 6mos right now. I'd be totally honest with you too (it's one of my defining traits!). Your smocking is absolutely gorgeous. I have a dress all cut out that needs smocking, but I've been too afraid of ruining it, so it's been sitting in my drawer. I'll have to break it out now that I've been inspired!!

  8. LOVE this dress!

And I am SO JEALOUS of the Motherload of vintage patterns that you found! REally coveting right now....

Why can't you be my neighbor so I can borrow them?

(Ok now I am sounding like a stalker...but they are amazing patterns.)
